Observatory Middleware Framework (OMF)

چکیده
Large observatory projects (such as the Large Synoptic Sky Telescope (LSST), the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI), the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), and the Water and Environmental Research System (WATERS)) are poised to provide independent, national-scale insitu and remote sensing cyberinfrastructures to gather and publish “community”-sensed data and generate synthesized products for their respective research communities. However, because a common observatory management middleware does not yet exist, each is building its own customized mechanism to generate and publish both derived and raw data to its own constituents, resulting in inefficiency and unnecessary redundancy of effort, as well as proving problematic for the efficient aggregation of sensor data from different observatories. The Observatory Middleware Framework (OMF) presented here is a prototype of a generalized middleware framework intended to reduce duplication of functionality across observatories. OMF is currently being validated through a series of bench tests and through pilot implementations to be deployed on the Monterey Ocean Observing System (MOOS) and Monterey Accelerated Research System (MARS) observatories, culminating in a demonstration of a multi-observatory use case scenario. While our current efforts are in collaboration with the ocean research community, we look for opportunities to pilot test capabilities in other observatory domains.

NEPTUNE for fast and easy deployment of OMF virtual network testbeds
In the last few years many emulation systems have been developed to evaluate the effectiveness of new protocols and applications in realistic and controllable network scenarios. NEPTUNE is a flexible architecture for cluster-based network emulation systems designed and implemented at University of Napoli Federico II. In this poster we first introduce the key components of NEPTUNE, then we show ...

متن کاملApplication Driven Mediation Middleware of the Russian Virtual Observatory for Scientific Problem Solving over Multiple Heterogeneous Distributed Information Resources
The paper considers the middleware architecture of subject mediators in the hybrid grid-infrastructure of the Russian virtual observatory (RVO) for scientific problem solving over a set of heterogeneous distributed information resources (such as databases, services, ontologies) integrated by the mediators. The RVO hybrid infrastructure is constructed as a merge of the AstroGrid VO system develo...
متن کاملMobile Experiments Made Easy with OMF/Orbit∗
Experimental facilites (or testbeds) are instrumental in the development and evaluation of new Internet technologies. Evaluations based on simulation and emulation do provide valuable, yet inexpensive insight into the performance of new networking technologies at large scales. However, simulators and emulators inherently make simplifying model assumptions. Thus, convincing the networking indust...
متن کاملDesigning and orchestrating reproducible experiments on federated networking testbeds
In addition to theoretical analysis and simulations, the evaluation of new networking technologies in a real-life context and scale is critical to their global adoption and deployment. Federations of experimental platforms (aka testbeds) offer a controlled and cost-effective solution to perform such an evaluation. Most recent efforts in that area focused on building those facilities and providi...
